Friends

Much
of the political debate about what to do with our waste, and how
to reduce it, has concentrated on municipal waste. However, we
produce 78 million tonnes of commercial and industrial waste a
year in England Wales, almost 20 per cent of the total waste we
generate. It is a significant waste stream that the Government,
industry and businesses could do much to reduce. |

waste technologies |
Friends

Waste
disposal authorities are increasingly looking at new technologies
to deal with waste other than landfill or incineration. This
briefing offers guidance on the questions local campaigners should
be asking when deciding whether to support new proposals. |

Incineration |

Implementation
of the EU Landfill Directive has resulted in the need to reduce
waste production and find new ways of waste disposal. One of the
favoured options is incineration with energy recovery. However,
this is a controversial issue and there is opposition to the use
of incineration as a form of waste disposal generally and, at a
local level, the siting of incinerators in particular. This paper
covers many of the issues relating to municipal solid waste
incineration. |

And Gasification: A Toxic Comparison |

The
United States Environmental Protection Agency distinguishes
pollution from mass burn incinerators and starved air gasification
units by the amount of pollution emitted, not by the type. In
other words, both starved air and excess air combustors emit the
same pollutants into the atmosphere, but in different amounts. For
example, EPA data show that gasification units emit more nitrogen
oxides and dioxins than incinerators, and equal amounts of
mercury. |
